Tracing runs in your browser. The redraw method sends the image to our model provider, which may not keep it or train on it.

Vectorization built for patent drawings

  • Two conversion methods

Redraw a messy scan or photo as patent line art with AI, or trace a clean drawing exactly as it is.

  • CAD-ready DXF

Closed polylines in millimetres, in the R12 format that AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360 and LibreCAD all open.

  • SVG and vector PDF

SVG for Illustrator or Inkscape; a vector PDF placed on a Letter or A4 sheet with the right margins and a FIG. label.

  • Resolution independent

Vectors print sharp at any size, so the 300 DPI rule stops being a problem.

  • Pure black and white

Outlines are solid black with no gray anti-aliasing, the way offices want drawings.

  • Fully editable

Move, delete or redraw parts in your CAD or vector editor before you add numerals.

What the vectorizer does

A raster drawing is a grid of pixels: enlarge it and the edges turn jagged, shrink it and thin lines vanish. The vectorizer finds the edges of every black stroke and writes them as mathematical outlines, so the figure scales cleanly onto a sheet and opens in CAD as geometry you can edit.

Faithful trace keeps the drawing exactly as drawn, including any hatching and fills. Patent line-art redraw first runs the figure through PatentStroke's line-art model, which removes shading, backgrounds and stray marks, then traces the clean result.

What vectorizes well, and what does not

  • Clean black-on-white line art, high-contrast scans, flowcharts and CAD screenshots trace well with the faithful method.
  • Photos, renders and shaded drawings should use the redraw method; tracing them directly gives blotchy outlines.
  • Very small text traces poorly at any setting; add reference numerals afterwards in the PatentStroke numeral editor.
  • Lines come out as filled outlines rather than single centerlines, so each stroke keeps its drawn thickness.

How to vectorize a patent drawing

  • Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP drawing up to 10 MB.
  • Choose patent line-art redraw or faithful trace; for tracing, adjust the black-and-white threshold.
  • Run it (20 credits), check the preview, and download DXF, SVG or PDF. All three formats come from the same run.
